From Manual to Automated: A Retailer's Digital Journey

This is a fictional story based on patterns we see across many Indian small businesses. Kumar represents thousands of shop owners navigating the same challenges.

Kumar runs a hardware and building materials shop on the outskirts of Coimbatore. His father started the business 30 years ago. Kumar took over 8 years ago. The shop does well — steady customers from the surrounding area, a few construction company accounts, and regular walk-in traffic.

But Kumar has a problem. Actually, several problems.

Life Before Automation

Kumar's daily routine looked like this:

• Morning (6–9 AM): Open the shop, check stock of fast-moving items (cement, paint, electrical fittings) by physically walking the aisles. Write down what seems low.

• Month-end: Spend 3–4 days matching ledgers, preparing GST returns with his CA, and chasing customers who haven't paid.

He was working 14–16 hour days. His wife said he was always stressed. His CA complained about late and messy records. And despite the hard work, Kumar felt like the business should be doing better — he just couldn't figure out where the leaks were.

Two things happened in the same month:
